North Kingstown, Rhode Island - Toray Plastics (America), Inc., a leading manufacturer of clear and metallized polyester and polypropylene film, has announced plans to acquire a sixth metallizing chamber within its TorayfanN oriented polypropylene (OPP) plant at the company's North Kingstown, Rhode Island headquarters. The addition of this new line upholds Toray Plastics (America)'s continued position as the industry leader in available capacity for production of metallized OPP film.
.......... With a capacity of approximately 15 million pounds per year, the new 4-meter line will be the largest Leybold metallizer in operation in the world, and will boost Toray's total capacity above 45 million pounds. It represents a capital investment by Toray of $12 million, adding to the $650 million already invested in the Rhode Island facility. Installation will be completed early in the year 2000.
.......... "Our driving focus is customer support, and we've invested in this new metallizer to meet the growing and changing needs of the companies we work with, and to lower cost," said Mr. Rick Schloesser, senior vice president, sales and marketing. "With better than 68% of the U.S. metallized OPP market already in hand, this additional capacity gives us the ability to support our customers' increased sales worldwide, the flexibility to develop more new products, and last but not least, continued dominance when it comes to delivering controlled levels of barrier and process consistency at the lowest cost."
.......... The size and capacity of the new line reinforces Toray's position as a dominant force in the metallized segment of the global packaging market. Metallized OPP is increasingly popular worldwide as a barrier packaging material. Growth has been significant in the area of foil replacement, for example, where it offers both performance and economic advantages.
.......... "We are committed to continued growth arising from new product development and value relationships with our customers, and our new metallizer will support our efforts in these areas," said Mr. Chris Lockhart, marketing manager.
.......... "We also foresee an opportunity in the future for this line to support growth in our other businesses as well, in areas both inside and outside the packaging market." Toray Plastics (America), Inc. is a leading manufacturer of polyester and polypropylene films for magnetic, industrial and capacitor applications as well as flexible and rigid packaging. The company is a subsidiary of Toray Industries, Inc., the world leader in synthetic fibers and textiles, carbon fibers, plastics, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and high performance films, with annual sales of $9 billion.
