North Kingstown, Rhode Island - Metallized OPP film from Toray Plastics (America), Inc., has long been established as a cost effective oxygen and moisture barrier packaging material. Technology developments in the last few years have enhanced barrier performance, allowing the use of Torayfan® metallized OPP in packaging where previously only foil was able to achieve desired shelf life results. These include applications such as pouches for cocoa, spice mixes, and powdered beverages, and with these packages in full production, another advantage has become evident: superior metal detection. Accurate metal detection is a critical step in quality control and product packaging. Every production process has some potential for metal contamination from the processing and handling equipment. This poses a safety hazard to the consumer, so detection and rejection of contaminated product is essential. Historically, products packaged with foil could only be scanned for the presence of metal prior to the final packaging process, leaving the potential for metal contamination during the packaging process to go undetected.
.......... "Foil packaging naturally inhibits metal detection," said Mr. Chris Roy, packaging sales manager at Toray Plastics (America). "Because of foil's high metal content, metal detection of the product must be done before the final packaging stage. Metallized film, on the other hand, has a much lower metal content, and permits post-packaging detection with a higher degree of accuracy."
Independent tests performed by Safeline, Inc., Tampa, Florida, a company that manufactures high-sensitivity microprocessor based metal detection equipment, demonstrate the through-package detection rates permitted by metallized film.
.........."We are able to achieve very good test results with metallized film packets," said Mr. Tony Ross, commercial manager for Safeline. We achieved 0.9mm ferrous, 1.8mm non-ferrous and 3.2mm 316 stainless steel. Compared to foil, these are excellent numbers for through-package detecting."
..........While actual metal detection results will depend upon the configuration and structure of each individual package, Roy noted that the ability to detect through-package at all represents a significant improvement in quality assurance. "It is just another incentive to switch from foil to metallized film," he said. "In addition to OPP's high oxygen and moisture barrier levels, puncture resistance, and superior shelf appearance, the ability to metal detect the finished packaged product gives our both customer and the end user a new level of quality control and confidence."
