| In 1996, the Composites Development Center was set up as a
separate operation of Toray Composites (America), Inc. (TCA). TCA produces
more than $70 million per year in carbon fiber prepreg, including material
for the Boeing 777. TCA is a subsidiary of Toray Industries, Inc., a $9 billion
dollar polymer science company. Toray has 32,000 employees worldwide and
is the world's largest supplier of carbon fiber. Spin Test Chamber For Flywheels The
Composites Development Center was established for the express purpose
of developing composites manufacturing capability and business in
specialized niches. The main focus has been on composite flywheel
rotors and Toray is now recognized as being the world's most capable
and highest quality manufacturer of composite flywheel rotors. This
success is a result of the hiring of professional, experienced personnel,
and developing proprietary high-speed filament winding processes.
Toray's processes and methods produce the highest rotor quality with consistent material properties, and cost effective production pricing. We currently manufacture, spin test, and provide design assistance for composite flywheel rotors to five companies. The Composites Development Center has also been developing other specialized processes in regard to composite rollers and vacuum assisted resin transfer molding. Our modern facility has 16,000 square feet and includes the following equipment and capabilities: ![]() Filament Wound Flywheel Rotors |
